"pronounce"主要有兩種用法：
"pronounce"的基本意思是用習慣的、公認的發音方式、重音、語調來「發音」，可用作不及物動詞，也可用作及物動詞。用作及物動詞時，接名詞或代詞作賓語。例如："She taught us how to pronounce those difficult words."（她教我們如何發這些困難字的音）。
"pronounce"還可以表示「宣布,宣稱」或「發表意見」「作出判決」，用作及物動詞，接名詞、代詞、that從句作賓語，還可接以「to be+ n./adj. / v -ed/ prep. -phrase」充當賓語補足語的複合賓語。例如："The doctors pronounced that he was no longer in danger."（醫生宣稱他已脫離危險）；"The minister was asked to pronounce on the proposed new legislation."（部長被要求就所提議的新的立法發表意見）。
此外，"pronounce"還有一些常用短語，如"pronounce against"、"pronounce for"、"pronounce on〔upon〕"等。
