《剪刀手愛德華》是一部關於機器人的現代童話。它講述一座古堡中住著一位發明家，製造出了各種東西，最後還造出了一個機器人，並給他起名叫愛德華。發明家對這件作品傾注了全部的心血，他甚至教授愛德華人類的禮儀和詩歌，何時微笑何時沉默。然而，沒有等到機器人最後完成，發明家就去世了，留下已有人類心智卻殘留著一雙剪刀手的愛德華獨自在古堡生活。不知過了多少歲月，一位推銷化妝品的中年女子佩格誤闖城堡，發現了形象古怪的愛德華。好心的佩格沒有被愛德華慘白的膚色和張牙舞爪的剪刀手嚇倒，而是憐其孤獨，把他帶回了自己的家。純潔的心靈在現實的世界無法生存，人類的自私貪婪容總是容不下它。
